Choose the business question
Dock-to-stock can refer to several intervals: arrival to receipt, unloading to putaway, or arrival to inventory availability. Each answers a different question. Agree which event begins the clock and what completion means. If customers are waiting for allocatable stock, a metric ending at receipt confirmation may miss the delay that matters. If the objective is dock utilization, vehicle service time may be more relevant than final storage availability.
Separate the waiting stages
Break the interval into observable steps where the data supports it: waiting for a door, unloading, verification, inspection, staging, and putaway. Do not imply precision beyond the events actually captured. A single elapsed-time number can hide whether the warehouse lacks labor, is awaiting a business decision, or is dealing with incorrect supplier information. The decomposition gives each owner a clearer path to investigate its portion.
Compare like with like
Palletized homogeneous loads and mixed floor-loaded shipments require different work. Inspection requirements and special handling also affect elapsed time. Segment the measure by relevant profiles before drawing conclusions about a shift or supplier. Use distributions and aging exceptions alongside averages. A few receipts held for days can coexist with many quick receipts, and the average may describe neither condition in a useful way.
Follow a delayed receipt end to end
Take a real late example and reconcile its timestamps with the physical process. Was the inventory already stored before confirmation? Was it waiting for a status release? Did the system record a staging movement as final putaway? These questions test the metric itself while revealing improvement opportunities. Avoid changing reporting logic merely to make the number smaller; keep it aligned with the operational objective.
Use the measure to support action
Assign owners to the waiting stages and review the oldest incomplete work. A practical daily view should show which receipts need a decision, missing data, or physical movement. After an intervention, check both time and accuracy. Shortening the interval by skipping verification can move the cost into later inventory or customer errors. The desired outcome is dependable usable inventory, not simply an earlier timestamp.
