Automated storage and retrieval
Automated storage and retrieval systems move inventory into and out of controlled storage using specialized equipment and software. The WMS and automation layer need a shared understanding of inventory identity, availability, and movement completion.
How it works in practice
Define inbound acceptance, storage and retrieval requests, acknowledgments, completed movements, and exception ownership. Test reconciliation and restart behavior after an interruption before relying on the automated flow.
A warehouse example
A retrieval request is accepted, but a physical fault prevents delivery. The inventory must not be treated as available at the workstation solely because the request was acknowledged.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
Recovery can require both physical investigation and system reconciliation. Do not replay commands blindly when the previous movement’s actual state is unknown.
A useful question
What evidence proves that a requested retrieval reached the agreed handoff point?
Terminology and configuration differ by product. These notes explain general concepts and are not operating instructions for equipment, a compliance determination, or a replacement for your site’s approved procedures.
