Interface contract testing
Contract testing checks whether connected systems exchange the agreed structure and meaning. It complements end-to-end testing but does not replace physical warehouse validation. A passing schema check is only one layer of evidence.
How it works in practice
Build examples for required fields, valid and invalid values, version changes, acknowledgments, and error behavior. Verify consumers and producers against the same expectations before release.
A warehouse example
A new optional field should not unexpectedly break an older consumer. A changed status meaning, however, may require coordinated business and technical updates even if the schema still validates.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
Mock responses can hide behavior of the actual installed product. Include representative environment tests and operational reconciliation where the risk requires them.
A useful question
Which change could pass a format test while still changing warehouse behavior?
Terminology and configuration differ by product. These notes explain general concepts and are not operating instructions for equipment, a compliance determination, or a replacement for your site’s approved procedures.
