Carrier cutoffs
A cutoff is a time boundary for a defined transport or service commitment. The warehouse must distinguish the carrier’s deadline from the internal deadlines needed to complete picking, packing, staging, and loading beforehand.
How it works in practice
Work backward from the applicable departure or acceptance requirement. Include variability and exception handling, and use the resulting internal milestones to prioritize work rather than treating all orders as equally urgent.
A warehouse example
An order requiring special documents may need to finish packing earlier than an ordinary parcel sharing the same carrier departure.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
A cutoff displayed without its date and time zone can be ambiguous across systems or regions. Holiday schedules and service changes also require controlled updates.
A useful question
Which internal milestone gives enough warning to recover a threatened shipment?
