Inventory status and eligibility
Inventory status expresses a business condition that affects what can happen to stock. Available, held, damaged, inspection, and other labels vary by system. What matters is the eligibility each status permits or prevents.
How it works in practice
Document the actions allowed for each status: allocation, movement, replenishment, picking, or dispatch. Define who can change status and test transitions across interfaces and related inventory attributes.
A warehouse example
Two pallets of the same item sit beside one another. One is eligible for customer orders; the other awaits investigation. Location proximity does not make their statuses equivalent.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
A status description that sounds restrictive may not actually block a process unless configuration enforces it. Validate behavior using real transactions and representative roles.
A useful question
Which processes are blocked when stock is placed on hold?
Terminology and configuration differ by product. These notes explain general concepts and are not operating instructions for equipment, a compliance determination, or a replacement for your site’s approved procedures.
