SSCC and logistic units
A Serial Shipping Container Code identifies a logistic unit under the GS1 identification system. A logistic unit can be a case, pallet, or parcel assembled for transport or storage. An internal LPN is not automatically an SSCC.
How it works in practice
Determine which parties require standardized logistic-unit identification and follow the applicable GS1 allocation and label guidance. Preserve the association between the identifier and the unit’s contents through the relevant exchange.
A warehouse example
A receiving partner scans a pallet identifier to connect the physical unit with shipment information. The agreed identifier allows the records to refer to the same unit.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
Do not invent a number format that merely resembles a standardized code. Confirm current rules and trading-partner requirements with the authoritative standard and responsible business owner.
A useful question
Which external party needs to recognize the logistic unit’s identity?
