Warehouse reference · Orders & picking
Short picks
A short pick occurs when the required quantity cannot be confirmed from the directed inventory. Causes include physical shortage, inaccessible stock, damage, wrong units, or a record problem. The reason determines the next safe action.
How it works in practice
Record the observed condition, protect the affected order, and follow the approved process for alternative inventory, counting, or escalation. Preserve the original task and investigation references.
A warehouse example
A pick face is empty while reserve stock exists. The right response may be replenishment rather than canceling the customer quantity or adjusting all inventory for the item.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
Repeatedly choosing a generic shortage code loses useful evidence. Distinguish missing stock from inaccessible stock and from stock that should not be used.
A useful question
Does the short-pick process correct the order and investigate the inventory cause?
