Warehouse reference · Inventory & traceability
Lot and batch control
A lot or batch groups inventory that shares a production or other defined origin. It supports traceability and may influence eligibility, rotation, and investigation. Lot format and uniqueness need explicit business definitions.
How it works in practice
Capture required lot information at the correct event, preserve it through movement and transformation, and connect outbound records to the relevant lots. Define correction and missing-lot exception procedures.
A warehouse example
A receipt contains the same item from two production lots. Recording it as one undifferentiated quantity can prevent the warehouse from answering which lot was later shipped.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
A supplier’s lot number may not be globally unique by itself. Item, supplier, owner, or other context can be necessary to identify the intended stock correctly.
A useful question
Can you trace a lot from receipt through its current locations and outbound movements?
