Dwell and detention visibility

Dwell measures elapsed time within a defined part of the process, such as arrival to departure. Detention is a commercial concept governed by agreed terms. A long dwell measure does not automatically establish a payable charge.

How it works in practice

Define the timestamps used, their source, and the activities included. Separate waiting, active service, and post-service delay where useful. Reconcile commercial questions against the actual contract and evidence.

A warehouse example

A trailer arrives early, waits for its appointment, unloads, and departs later. Different time boundaries answer different operational and commercial questions about that visit.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

Do not turn an internal duration threshold into a legal or billing conclusion. Contractual interpretation and disputes require the responsible commercial team.

A useful question

Which timestamps identify the delay the warehouse can actually influence?

Terminology and configuration differ by product. These notes explain general concepts and are not operating instructions for equipment, a compliance determination, or a replacement for your site’s approved procedures.
