KPI definitions

A KPI is useful only when its calculation and purpose are understood. Warehouse measures depend on event boundaries, units, population, time window, and exclusions. Identically named measures may not be comparable across operations.

How it works in practice

Write the formula, source events, time zone, owner, and intended decision. Validate sample records and distinguish raw activity from completed business outcomes before distributing the measure.

A warehouse example

Lines picked per hour changes meaning if one report uses paid hours and another uses only recorded direct picking time. Neither definition should remain implicit.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

A target can encourage unwanted behavior if it ignores quality or downstream completion. Pair throughput with relevant accuracy and flow measures.

A useful question

Can two reviewers calculate the same result from the same underlying records?
