Inventory adjustments

An adjustment changes an inventory record to reflect an authorized correction or business event. It should explain why the record changed and who approved it. Adjustment capability is not a substitute for completing missing operational transactions.

How it works in practice

Identify the discrepancy, investigate relevant history, choose an accurate reason, and apply approval rules before posting. Confirm that dependent systems receive the resulting change and that the physical and recorded states agree.

A warehouse example

A missed movement should normally be resolved through the appropriate controlled workflow. Posting a quantity adjustment at both locations can hide the actual movement and distort variance reporting.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

Broad permissions and generic reason codes make adjustments easy to perform but difficult to explain. Separate emergency recovery from ordinary correction and review both.

A useful question

Can a reviewer reconstruct the reason, evidence, and approval for an adjustment?
