Cycle counting

Cycle counting verifies selected inventory during normal operations instead of relying solely on a complete periodic physical inventory. The selection method and controls determine what the count can demonstrate. Counting is also an opportunity to investigate recurring causes.

How it works in practice

Select the count scope, control competing activity as required, record observations, review differences, and authorize corrections. Keep initial counts, recounts, approvals, and resulting adjustments distinguishable in the history.

A warehouse example

A location repeatedly shows one case less than expected. Correcting the number each week may hide a unit-conversion, picking, or replenishment problem that needs separate investigation.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

A count conducted while untracked physical movement continues may measure timing rather than true discrepancy. Understand what the system freezes or controls during the activity.

A useful question

Which recurring variances have a documented root cause rather than only an adjustment?
