Dock appointments
A dock appointment reserves an intended arrival or service window for a shipment. It helps coordinate carriers and receiving capacity but does not guarantee that the load is ready, on time, or suitable for the assigned door.
How it works in practice
Capture shipment identity, carrier, estimated workload, equipment needs, and timing. Compare appointments with expected receipts and available capacity. Record arrival, service start, completion, and departure as separate events when useful.
A warehouse example
Two trailers can contain the same pallet count but need different unloading time because one is floor-loaded and the other is palletized. Scheduling should reflect the work, not only the vehicle count.
Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.
What to watch for
Treating every appointment as an identical slot can hide overload. Include exceptions for late arrivals, missing paperwork, door outages, and shipments requiring inspection.
A useful question
Which appointment information helps the dock prepare before a trailer arrives?
Terminology and configuration differ by product. These notes explain general concepts and are not operating instructions for equipment, a compliance determination, or a replacement for your site’s approved procedures.
