Inventory reconciliation

Reconciliation compares inventory views and explains differences between them. The comparison might involve physical stock, WMS records, ERP balances, owners, locations, or pending transactions. Matching totals alone can conceal important detail differences.

How it works in practice

Agree the comparison time, units, included statuses, ownership dimensions, and treatment of in-flight events. Investigate differences using shared references rather than overwriting one system to match the other without explanation.

A warehouse example

Two systems show 1,000 units in total, but one assigns 200 units to the wrong owner. The total agrees while the operational and commercial records remain incorrect.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

Comparing snapshots taken at different times can create false discrepancies. Keep event timing and unprocessed messages visible before deciding a correction is necessary.

A useful question

Which dimensions must agree for the reconciliation to be meaningful?
