Warehouse reference · Orders & picking

Zone picking

Zone picking divides work among areas with different inventory, equipment, or operating requirements. An order may pass through several zones or have independently picked portions consolidated later. The handoffs are part of the design.

How it works in practice

Define zone boundaries, order routing, container ownership, and the point at which all required portions are reconciled. Monitor missing or delayed portions before final packing or dispatch.

A warehouse example

An order combines small parts from shelving with a bulky item from a separate area. Each zone completes its work, and consolidation verifies that the order is complete.

Illustrative scenario, not a claim about a client engagement.

What to watch for

Local zone productivity can look strong while orders wait for one delayed portion. Use end-to-end completion measures alongside zone-level output.

A useful question

What tells consolidation that every required zone has finished?
